Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

According to new research, eat two or more servings of avocado a week can reduce the risk of heart disease by a fifth.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, was based on interviews with more than 68.000 women and 41.000 men about their diet every four years over a 30-year period.

Research found that avocado reduced the risk of heart attacks in both men and women, even when consumed in place of butter, cheese or processed meats.

A systematic review

The study tracked more than 110.000 healthy men and women between the ages of 30 and 75 in the United States for 30 years.

Participants were asked about their diets every two to four years. Their responses were compared to the medical records at the end of the trial.

Overall, the results showed that those who ate a whole avocado once a week were 16% less likely to suffer from any form of heart disease, compared to those who never or rarely ate the fruit.

Regular avocado consumers were 21% less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease.

Researchers found that those who swapped less healthy fatty foods for avocados saw tremendous health benefits.

Cheryl Anderson, chair of the AHA Council on Epidemiology and Prevention, said:

While no food is the solution, this study is proof that avocados have possible health benefits.

Avocados are rich in omega fatty acids which reduce bad cholesterol, and prevent plaque build-up in artery walls. Harvard researchers point to one in particular, theomega 9, which can also improve blood pressure and inflammation.
