According to a search, muscle weakness can be a sign of vitamin D deficiency, for this reason, older people in particular are twice as likely to have a deficiency in the sunshine vitamin. Hence, maintaining healthy muscles is important for healthy old age, improved mobility and reduced weakness - all of which improve an individual's quality of life.
A systematic review
To determine the relationship between the poor muscle function and vitamin D., the study analyzed data from 4.157 people aged 60 and over. Participants underwent some tests to measure muscle strength and physical function; the results showed that muscle weakness in people with vitamin D deficiency was double that of those with adequate levels of the same vitamin.
Furthermore, poor physical performance and low muscle strength were three times higher in the deficient participants. Therefore, low levels of vitamin D are linked to poor muscle function as well as a weakened immune system, worse sleep quantity and quality, bad mood, fatigue, learning difficulties, intestinal problems and headaches.
