Dengue in Bologna. The USL Department of Public Health has confirmed a case in the Savena district. It is an infectious disease transmitted by the tiger mosquito.

The Municipality of Bologna already has activated the necessary prophylaxis measures through atrade union ordinance. The virus, transmitted by the mosquito, was found on a citizen returning from a trip.

To ensure prophylaxis, disinfestation of the public areas surrounding the home of the affected person was carried out in the nights just passed - between 6 and 8 July, as required by the regional protocol, while yesterday the disinfestation and the removal of any larval foci in private areas.

What is dengue? It is an infectious disease that normally has a benign course but has an acute phase that lasts about a week. It is accompanied by severe joint pain that can last up to a few months.

Symptoms. High fever, headache, muscle and joint pain are the most common, in addition to the characteristic skin spots, similar to those of measles.

Dengue fever is a tropical infectious disease caused by the virus of the same name that exists in four different serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4). Usually, infection with one type grants lifelong immunity for that type, while it involves only a brief immunity to the others. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, especially the Aedes aegypti species.

In severe cases, life-threatening haemorrhagic fever may occur. To date, the only weapon is prevention, by eliminating mosquitoes and their habitat, thus limiting exposure to the risk of transmission.
