Uno study looked at how taking vitamins could lead to autism risk for offspring in pregnant women. The study included 1257 mother-child pairs, recruited at birth and followed prospectively in infancy.
THEmaternal multivitamin supplementation was assessed through an interview with a questionnaire; Maternal plasma folate and vitamin B12 were measured from samples taken two or three days after birth.
The study found that self-reported moderate (three to four times per week) supplementation during pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of autism, and high (over five times per week) supplementation was associated with increased risk of autism. Obviously, this study does not question the importance of adequately consuming folic acid and vitamin B12 during pregnancy; rather, it raises new questions about the impact of extremely high plasma folate levels and vitamin B12 exposure in utero on early brain development.
