A lettuce decoction fights insomnia: it's not just a TikToker that says it (with 4 million views), but science too.
Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerousA lettuce decoction if you suffer from insomnia? Of course! And it's not just a TikToker that says it (with 4 million views), but science too. Its sedative and calming qualities, due to the lactucin, will make you take long and placid naps. A cup of lettuce decoction in the evening, in fact, before going to sleep, promotes night rest.
Bringing the benefits of lettuce decoction to the fore is a London girl, Shapla Hoque, who shared the tip on her TikTok account in a video. As unappetizing as it may sound, it appears to actually work.
What it does is nothing more than pour boiling water over some washed lettuce leaves, adding peppermint tea, and wait a few minutes.

The moment of sleep seems to arrive very quickly, thus confirming something that science had already discovered.
What the girl does, in fact, is nothing far-fetched. The sleeping power of lettuce comes from its high levels of lactucarium, a principle that scientists have found to have a real sedative effect. A 2017 study stated that Lactuca sativa (lettuce, in fact), is an annual herb that belongs to the Compositae family, known for its medicinal value. Traditionally, it has confirmed sedative-hypnotic properties.
The results of this study show that lettuce, particularly romaine lettuce, is an interesting and inexpensive source of sleep-enhancing elements and antioxidant polyphenols, it reads.
And not only that, the lettuce decoction is a real natural supplement, especially fat with a high content of mineral salts. And then:
- it favors the regularity of the intestine thanks to its mild laxative activity
- reduces abdominal swelling and bloating
- stimulates diuresis
- it is rich in antioxidants
How to prepare lettuce decoction
Boil half a small head of classic lettuce, washed and cut into small pieces, in about 200 ml of natural water. Leave on the fire for about 5 minutes, then strain and let it cool slightly.
