Going to the sea and being close to the water makes us happy: that's why

Water attracts us, fascinates us and makes us happy. When we go to the sea and when we are near the water we are usually fine.

THEwater it attracts us, fascinates us and makes us happy. When we go to the sea and when we are near the water we are usually fine. Think, for example, of the desire to reach a beach or a mountain lake as soon as spring and summer arrive.

Why does water have such a strong and beneficial influence on us? If we think of water, we immediately recall feelings of well-being in our minds. Admiring the sea, a lake or a waterfall is a powerful one Anti-stress. It is enough to look closely at the water in a natural environment to feel calmer, but sometimes even a simple photograph or image dedicated to water can have a relaxing power.

Il book 'Blue Mind. Mind and Water ' by Wallace J. Nichols (research associate at the California Academy of Sciences and founder and co-director of Ocean Revolution, SEE the WILD, and LiVBLUE.) explains the hidden link between water and our mind.

Medical and scientific research is studying water and its effects on our body and brain, with particular reference to the physiological and brain processes that occur when we connect with water.

According to the author of 'Blue Mind', if we build on the research conducted so far, we find that proximity to water is essential for reduce anxiety, increase creativity, improve generosity and empathy, strengthen our bond with nature, have better health and general well-being and also increase our personal success.

Nichols refers to the blue mind - connected to water - as part of the human race which, however, is mostly a slave to the red mind, that is to stress, and forgets how important it can be to rediscover contact with water and nature.

The author invites us to rediscover that 'blue state of mind' which belongs to all of us by reporting personal experiences of scientists, athletes and artists who consider the water element very important for their life. Nichols speaks of water above all from a scientific and neuroscientific point of view but also mentions spirituality, without however falling into the banalities of the New Age.

Water, for example, makes us think of blu, which is the considered the most relaxing color for our mind. Among the studies cited by the author we find some interesting confirmations: observing landscape images with trees, meadows and lakes, improves concentration and increases student performance. Also, we already know that living in contact with nature makes you happier, but this result increases by 5,2% when we are close to a watercourse, according to a study conducted with the Mappiness app.

Finally, according to Nichols, happiness is blue. Here's hers tip for better living:

“Take a deep breath and imagine the leap… the water fills the light, the sound, the air and your mind. Now open your eyes, all around you you see only blue. Breathe. Listens. Experience the sense of well-being that being immersed in water gives you. It is useless to deny it, perhaps useless even to ask ourselves why, but you are happy ”.
