According to one study the risk of developing gout decreased among people who drank the most coffee. The analysis found that those who consumed one to three cups of coffee a day had a 22% reduction in gout risk, compared with those who drank no coffee. On the other hand, those who consumed more than four cups of coffee a day showed a decrease of 57%.

Experts believe that coffee could reduce uric acid levels, increasing the rate at which the body eliminates it. However, it's not necessarily the caffeine that you need to thank; in fact, research has stated that compounds in coffee, other than caffeine, are responsible for lowering uric acid levels.

What is gout?

Gout is a common form of inflammatory arthritis which can come on suddenly and cause pain in the joints of the feet, hands, wrists, elbows or knees, but according to the NHS it usually affects the big toe predominantly. In addition to pain, symptoms also include warm, swollen and red skin; symptoms can last from five to seven days.



Gout is therefore caused by a condition known as hyperuricemia, which occurs when there is too much uric acid in the body. The body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines, which are found in our bodies and in the foods we eat. 

What foods can cause gout?

Gout can be caused by a number of lifestyle factors, but it can also be caused by various conditions, such as blood and metabolic disorders or kidney and thyroid problems.

However, some foods are more likely to increase the risk of developing this problem, such as:

  • alcohol
  • high-fat foods such as red meat, bacon, and dairy products
  • organ meats such as liver
  • foods and drinks that are high in sugar
  • some types of fish, including tuna, trout and sardines
