What is bubble tea

Bubble tea is a drink originally from Taiwan, born around the 80s. Also known as milk tea, pearl tea, tapioca drink or tea silly, this particular and fascinating drink can be produced with different varieties of tea, to which vegetable milk, various aromas, sugar and tapioca are added. It can be prepared in two different ways, with milk or without milk; while, the most used teas for bubble tea are tender, green tea or variety oolong. To flavor you can add fresh fruit or fruit juice to taste, for an even fresher and summery taste. 

Why is it called bubble tea

Bubble tea is literally "tea with bubbles". Why is it called that? Probably from the term "bubble" which derives from the Taiwanese word "boba", used to indicate the tapioca pearls, which is the main ingredient of bubble tea. What is tapioca 

La tapioca it is used in the bubble tea recipe and is the ingredient that gives the drink its particular appearance, which has made it known all over the world. It is a derivative of the manioca, that is a root rich in carbohydrates and low in gluten, widely used in Africa and South America. 

Natural cassava is toxic, but if dried or cooked it can be safely consumed without undesirable effects. Tapioca is obtained from the washed, peeled and then ground cassava, often used as thickener because if immersed in water becomes gelatinous.

Method

Making bubble tea at home is very simple, plus, it's the best solution if you want consume less sugar, since the versions on the market are very sweet as they are enriched with honey, various aromas, syrups o sweeteners. ingredients:

  • 1 cup of black tapioca pearls
  • 500 ml of water
  • 1 tablespoon of green tea or black tea 
  • brown sugar to taste to sweeten the tea
  • 100 ml of rice milk
  • mango juice or other fruit optional 

Procedure:



  • The first step is to soak the tapioca pearls in cold water for about an hour. 
  • Meanwhile, prepare the tea in a classic way and add sugar to taste.
  • After that, rinse and cook the tapioca pearls for 10 minutes in 500ml of water. 
  • Let them cool, drain and dip them into the previously brewed tea.
  • Add the rice milk and your bubble tea is ready to be enjoyed.

If you wish, you can add mango juice, fresh fruit or ice to make your drink even more thirst-quenching.
