Breast cancer accounts for 30% of all female cancers and is unfortunately still the leading cause of cancer mortality for women worldwide. Although, thanks to early diagnosis and effective therapies, this cancer is increasingly treatable and survival for patients is increasing, much can still be done to prevent this disease.

There are periodic screenings that you can undergo and many awareness and prevention campaigns invite women to check the health of their breasts more often (also through self-examination, which we talked about in this article), however, our eating habits, our lifestyle, exposure to pollutants also make a lot of difference.

A new study in the United States, for example, has shown that women with low blood vitamin D levels are at increased risk of breast cancer. Low levels of this vitamin would also be linked to the onset of autoimmune diseases and other pathologies (such as Coronavirus).

American researchers have been interested in a particular segment of the population, namely that of women of African American or Hispanic origin: it is believed that almost two texts of black women and over a third of Hispanic women living in the United States suffer from vitamin D deficiency - and this is due to the darker color of the skin, which corresponds to higher levels of melanin.

Furthermore, while white women are more likely to develop breast cancer than black women, the latter have the highest breast cancer mortality rate in the United States (31%): social and economic inequalities, racial discrimination. and reduced access to adequate medical care play a role in widening this disparity.

All participants selected for the study (1.300 black women and 562 Hispanic-Latino women) had a sister who was diagnosed with breast cancer. The researchers analyzed the levels of vitamin D in the women's blood and conducted interviews to find out about their health, their lifestyle and the possible presence of other diseases.

Participants were followed for nine years, during which time 290 black women and 125 Hispanic women developed breast cancer. Analyzing the levels of vitamin D in the small group of women who became ill during the study, it was found that too low levels of this vitamin - less than 20ng / mL - are connected to a higher risk of developing breast cancer (+ 21%). In contrast, women with good blood vitamin D levels show greater resistance to breast cancer - a 48% lower risk for Latino women and 11% lower risk for black women, respectively.
