THEarginine belongs to the category of amino acids, chemical substances that are fundamental for our organism as, when combined together in different combinations, they form the protein. Specifically, arginine is an essential amino acid but only in the early stages of life, i.e. at the time of growth (more or less up to 14-15 years).

For adults, arginine is no longer an essential amino acid as, after the first years of life, the body is able to synthesize it from other substances thanks to the work of the liver and kidneys. We can anyway ensure a good supply of arginine by following a correct diet, for example, foods such as peanuts, walnuts and almonds but also vegetable including broad beans, lentils and chickpeas in the dry variant as well as proteins of animal origin such as meat, fish and eggs.

BENEFITS OF ARGININE

Arginine it plays fundamental roles in our organism: helps the synthesis of other amino acids and substances useful for cells, participates in protein and glucose synthesis, stimulates the immune system and has antioxidant power.

It is a very useful amino acid for the well-being of the heart as it helps vasodilation, however, its effect on male fertility was also studied, noting how the men who had a good level of it in the body were also the same ones who showed better quality as well as sperm motility.

The right levels of arginine help defenses of our organism in the fight against pathogenic microorganisms but they are also a good shield against tumors. Currently a supplement of this substance in the clinical setting is a lot also used in case of trauma and severe burnsThis is because arginine helps in the formation of collagen and therefore contributes to the healing of injured tissues.

Recent research has also highlighted the importance that this amino acid has on brain functions: a lack of arginine would even be a serious risk factor for the onset of Alzheimer's.

This amino acid is very loved by those who practice sports at high levels as, in addition to the antioxidant effect, it also has a fundamental role in detoxifying the nitrogenous waste produced with training. This concretely means that arginine helps the body to dispose of ammonia which is created after a strong muscular effort with a consequent sense of fatigue. It also acts as a gluconeogenetic substance, as once glucose stocks are exhausted, arginine can be used for energy.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

We all take arginine in our diet and synthesize it in our bodies. There are some cases, however, in which foods that contain large quantities of it should be avoided, for example if you suffer from herpes as it has been shown how this amino acid can help promote the replication of viruses. The situation is different with regard to the real supplements: these products are not recommended in case of kidney or liver failure, if you assume certain drugs (always ask your doctor for advice) but also more simply during pregnancy and lactation.
