Fruits and vegetables are not only good for our body, but also for our mind.
New research published by the journal Social Science Medecine published by the journal Social Science Medecine based on two studies, one from the University of Leeds and the other from the University of York in Great Britain, showed, in fact, a positive association between amount of fruit and vegetables consumed and mental well-being.
After checking for alternative factors that can affect the psyche, such as age, education, income, marital status, employment status, lifestyle and health, as well as consumption of other foods such as bread or dairy products, the researchers concluded that just eating an extra serving of fruit and vegetables each day could have a beneficial effect on the psyche equivalent to about 10 minutes of walking in the fresh air.
“It is now proven that eating fruit and vegetables can benefit physical health. More recent studies have suggested that it could also benefit psychological well-being. Our research builds on previous work conducted in Australia and New Zealand, verifying this relationship on a much larger British sample. While more work is needed to prove cause and effect, the results are clear: people who eat more fruits and vegetables report a higher level of mental well-being and life satisfaction than those who eat less, "explain the researchers.
Therefore, the list of scientifically proven benefits of consuming fruit and vegetables is lengthened, even on our mind. Yet sadly, the data shows that most people still consume less than the recommended five servings per day.
In short: do you want to be happy? Eat one more fruit!
