Burn-out: work-related stress officially recognized as a syndrome

Burnout has officially entered the WHO list of medical disorders.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Burnout officially entered the list of medical disorders drawn up annually by the World Health Organization. Like a real "professional phenomenon", exhaustion from work is not so much classified as a medical condition, but as syndrome resulting from chronic stress.

Burn-out is therefore now included in the 11th revision of the international classification of diseases (ICD-11) but - unlike video game addiction recognized as a full-fledged pathology - it is understood as a "professional phenomenon".

That is, the WHO describes it in the chapter dedicated to "factors that influence the state of health or contact with health services", which in turn includes the reasons why people contact health services but which are not classified as diseases or health conditions.

Specifically, burnout is defined in the ICD-11 as a "syndrome conceptualized as a consequence of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed".

It is characterized by three dimensions:

  • feelings of energy exhaustion or exhaustion;
  • greater mental distance from their work, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to their work;
  • reduced professional efficacy.

Burnout also “refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life”.

What is burn-out

From the English "burned, burst, melted", the term burn-out describes that feeling that can be had when it has reached a severe emotional and chronic stress.

It's about the sphere professional and it is the pathological outcome of a long process that affects people in helping professions (such as nurses or policemen), but also those who feel crushed, frustrated or have a sense of rejection towards their work.

It manifests itself with strong emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced achievement in the professional environment and all symptoms are attributable to anxiety-depressive spectrum disorders and underline a person's tendency to somatization and the development of behavioral disorders.

In the same new list, Icd-11, which will come into effect in January 2022, also includes "compulsive sexual behavior" as a mental disorder and, for the first time, in addition to video game addiction as we have seen, also gambling. gambling and drugs such as cocaine. Finally, the condition of transgender is moved from the list of mental disorders to those of "conditions relating to sexual health".
