Anemia: several causes, the most common being a lack of iron

Anemia can have several causes, the most common being iron deficiency, more common in women

Anemia. A problem that mainly affects women and that can have different causes, as many as 17, of which the most frequent, however, remains lack of iron. These are the data reported by the magazine Blood that refer to a report on the spread of this problem between 1990 and 2010.

The report shows how the onset of this pathology has decreased somewhat in recent years but also that unfortunately, those who suffer from it are particularly affected on a physical and psychological level by symptoms (asthenia, headache, chronic fatigue, etc.) that are perceived as worse than those of other types of diseases, even more serious or difficult to treat such as depression and chronic respiratory diseases.

Let's try to understand better what it consists of iron deficiency anemia. First of all it must be said that each person has iron stores of about 3-4 grams, a small part (about 1 gram) accumulated in the liver, spleen and bone marrow and the rest bound instead to hemoglobin, a protein of red blood cells essential for transporting oxygen within the body. All this is important to understand that initially, even in the case of iron deficiencies, symptoms of anemia may not occur precisely because our (intelligent) organism first goes to use the stocks it has.

We must therefore distinguish two possibilities:iposideremia, or iron deficiency without anemia because the body still has its reserves to draw from, and the actual anemia. To understand if you are in one of the two situations you have to do specific blood tests that evaluate: blood count, hemoglobin rate, sideremia (iron not bound to hemoglobin), ferritin (protein useful for storing iron) and transferrin saturation (another protein that serves to transport iron in the blood). Once these data have been obtained, the doctor will be able to establish what the specific problem is.

But let's go back to causes of a possible anemia. These can be: a low intake of iron in food, absorption problems, pregnancy, excessive blood loss (menstruation, hemorrhoids, ulcers, etc.), presence of a gastritis or atrophy of the duodenum. Another situation in which anemia can occur is when the body has an infection Helicobacter pylori which, present in the duodenum, can compromise the absorption of iron.

If it is anemia due to a wrong eating style or poor iron absorption always caused by bad habits (such as drinking coffee and tea with meals) will help you some remedies, natural cures and small tricks to put into practice such as eating green leafy vegetables with the addition of a little lemon juice (vitamin C in fact facilitates the absorption of iron).
