In the Netherlands, Viagra is being tested on a group of pregnant women, but there are 11 registered abortions and children who will never see the light. This is the terrifying news coming from the Netherlands, where some pregnant women suffering from placental insufficiency had been placed in a medical trial program. For this the experiment was stopped.

What the researchers thought was that Viagra could help fetuses grow by perfecting the blood supply to the placenta thanks to its dilating effect on the vessels. But this did not happen. Something went wrong and now 11 have died from lung problems.

The research had started in 2015 and was supposed to continue until 2020 with the participation of 350 patients who have recently given birth. It has now been stopped, at a time when an independent committee overseeing the research linked the deaths.

The test was conducted in 10 hospitals in Amsterdam and other cities, so far on a total of 93 women, and the aim was to solve the problem of placental insufficiency (caused by hypertension, old age, the presence of a twin pregnancy ), which currently has no possible therapies. All through the sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, to help the placenta's own development.

The suspicion is that the pill-induced rise in blood pressure had the side effect of carrying too much oxygen in the lungs of the little ones, damaging them and in some cases leading to their death.

In an interview with Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant, the head of the research, gynecologist Wessel Ganzevoort, says he is shocked. "We thought we could demonstrate a positive effect on the child's growth and instead the opposite happened, the last thing we wanted was to harm the patients," he said, explaining that this tragic ending has already been communicated to a team of Canadian researchers to conduct a similar study.
