Side effects of statins

As almost all of us know, our body needs the right amount of only one type of cholesterol, namely HDL (the "good cholesterol"). The type of cholesterol that statins counter is LDL (the "bad cholesterol"), which forms as plaque in the arteries that increases blood pressure.

The side effects of statins can affect different parts of our body, including the liver. Statins can in fact causehepatitis, i.e. inflammation of the liver. The various symptoms of hepatitis generally are:

  • muscle and joint pain,
  • increased body temperature,
  • weakness,
  • fatigue,
  • loss of appetite,
  • stomach ache,
  • urine with a darker color,
  • itchy skin,
  • jaundice.

It must be remembered that although hepatitis is one of the most serious side effects that statins can produce, it is still extremely rare. Other side effects of statins are, however:

  • headache,
  • dizziness,
  • constipation,
  • diarrhea,
  • indigestion,
  • muscle aches,
  • sleep disorders,
  • low levels of platelets.

However, there are many ways a person can lower their cholesterol levels in addition to medications, such as improving their diet, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption.
