Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

It gives a smell test it is possible to understand how long we will live. Can't recognize the smell of fish or peppermint? Then perhaps you may see your life expectancy reduced. Superstitious? Those who lose their olfactory abilities in old age could be faced with a very precise forecast: will die within 5 years. The decline in olfactory abilities is therefore related to both aging and life expectancy.

It was one who revealed it study titled Olfactory Dysfunction Predicts 5-Year Mortality in Older Adults conducted at the University of Chicago and published a few years ago on Plos One. Don't panic, experts warn, as further investigations will be needed.

A systematic review

The researchers took into consideration over 3000 people aged between 57 and 85 years. Each of them was subjected to olfactory tests to verify if he was able to recognize some odors, according to an increasing degree of difficulty. The test covered five smells very specific:

  • peppermint,
  • fish,
  • Orange,
  • pink
  • leather.

After five years, 430 participants had died. These were the same people who had been diagnosed with olfactory disturbances, both mild and severe. Loss of smell could be a factor related to increased risk of death, but experts have not yet understood how this link works.

Smell of health: if you smell these smells after the age of 50 you could live 5 years longer

@Plosone

I'm there at the moment two theories, both of which are quite worrying:

  1. According to the first theory, the polluting substances that we breathe first damage the sense of smell and then the brain and body.
  2. The second theory speculates that the health of the nerve of smell, which transmits information from the nose to the brain, is a sign of the body's overall health.

We will have to await further developments of scientific research to understand the connection between olfaction, aging and the increased risk of death all the way through. In the meantime, let's not forget that this life is also made for taking a break to smell the scent of a flower.
