Do you want to reduce the risk of cancer by 40%? Stop eating processed meat and drinking alcohol. This is what the new health guidelines dictated by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) suggest
Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerousDo you want to reduce the risk of cancer by 40%? Stop eating processed meat and drinking alcohol. This is what the new health guidelines dictated by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) suggest.
The latter are based on a study carried out on over 50 million people. This is dethe largest cancer research ever conducted. In total, 3,5 million of them have been diagnosed with cancer. The analysis found that there is strong evidence that red meat consumption and processed meat consumption are both causes of colorectal cancer.
For this reason, the WCRF urges everyone to limit their intake of red meat (beef, veal, pork, lamb, venison and goat) and to consume little or no processed meat (ham, bacon, salami and sausage).
If you eat red meat, the WCRF urges you to limit your consumption to no more than three servings per week, about 350-500g of cooked weight.
"It is not necessary to consume red meat to maintain an adequate nutritional status ... eating meat is not an essential part of a healthy diet," the study reads.
Research is even stricter on the consumption of processed meat. In this case, the evidence against him is even more stark. The data show that no level of intake can be associated with the absence of risk. On the contrary. The risk of cancer increases by eating even the smallest amounts of processed meat.
Alcohol is also blacklisted: it is linked to cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colorectal and breast.
"Even small amounts of alcoholic beverages can increase the risk of contracting various cancers" it is read in the studio.
As with processed meat, the WCRF says there is no amount of alcohol, even the smallest, that doesn't increase the risk of getting cancer.
The guidelines also highlighted the link between obesity and certain types of cancer in ten points. However, red, processed meat and alcohol were directly linked to the cancer itself, not just excess weight.
Here are ten steps to reduce cancer risk:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise
- Have a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes
- Limit your consumption of "fast food" foods and other processed foods high in fat, starch or sugar
- Limit your consumption of red and processed meat
- Limit the consumption of sugary drinks
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Do not use cancer prevention supplements
- For mothers: breastfeed your baby as this helps mothers protect themselves from breast cancer and prevents babies from being overweight
- After a cancer diagnosis, continue to follow the advice above because there is growing evidence that lifestyle factors (such as increased fat mass and low levels of physical activity) affect women's chances of survival. after a diagnosis of breast cancer and also other cancers.
