Omega 3: Help the intestines and keep diabetes and obesity away

Omega 3 and health. A lot of research over the years has focused on analyzing the benefits of these essential fatty acids. We often talk about the advantages on heart health but their usefulness for the well-being of the intestine and in the prevention of important pathologies has also been confirmed.

Omega 3 and health. A lot of research over the years has focused on analyzing the benefits of these essential fatty acids. We often talk about the advantages on heart health but their usefulness for the well-being of the intestine and in the prevention of important pathologies has also been confirmed.

As we now know, foods rich in omega 3 are mainly fatty fish such as salmon but also plant foods such as seeds and linseed oil, nuts, avocados, etc. Why are they so good? The reasons are many, but now a new research, conducted by the University of Nottingham and King's College London and published in Scientific Reports, has focused on the relationship between the intake of Omega 3 through diet and the well-being of the intestinal microbiome (i.e. bacterial heritage of the intestine).

To do this, 876 women were sampled who, through some questionnaires, had to indicate how many Omega 3 fatty acids they took with food. A comparison was then made with the levels of these acids present in the blood. Analyzing the results it was seen that the higher the presence of Omega 3, the better was the diversity of the intestinal microbiome which was also enriched by bacteria of the Lachnospiraceae family.

This detail is important because, as Cristina Menni, one of the authors of the study, explained, it is:

"Specific bacteria that have been linked to less inflammation and a lower risk of obesity were increased in people with higher omega-3 fatty acid intake."

This concretely means that taking the right amount of Omega 3 leads to better intestinal health and this offers significant advantages including a lower risk of suffering from diabetes as well as inflammatory bowel diseases such as colitis or Chron's disease.

Some researches a few years ago had already shown how Omega 3 were important in the prevention of inflammation of the intestine but not only, these precious fatty acids would also be useful in preventing breast cancer and even beneficial for our mood.

English research has also shown that good levels of Omega 3 in the blood correspond to high levels in the intestine of a compound called N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) which, in some previous studies unfortunately conducted on animals, has been linked to a reduction in stress. intestinal oxidative.
So let's not forget to include Omega 3 in our diet more often, paying attention to the correct balance with omega 6, which we generally take in much larger quantities.
