Recent research, conducted in Chicago by a team from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and published in the journal Circulation, argues that consuming extra virgin olive oil every day is an excellent habit to keep the heart in good health and is particularly recommended for those suffering from heart failure.

The fats contained in the oil, in fact, have been shown to improve the essential functions of the heart or the contraction and pumping of blood. In particular it is theoleic acid to be beneficial and to help even the most weary hearts to do their work better.

The research, unfortunately conducted on an animal model, compared the effects on the heart of oleic acid and palmitate, extracted from palm oil. Scientists, led by Dr Douglas E. Lewandowski, were thus able to observe the benefits of the former and the negative results of the latter on cardiovascular health.

Regarding the use of oleic acid, Lewandowski stated "we observed an immediate improvement in the way the hearts contracted and pumped blood" while for the palmitate the result was very different: we saw how this substance has actually unbalanced the fat metabolism (a problem that people with heart failure already have).

According to research, oleic acid is capable of even reactivate some genes useful for enzymes that serve to better metabolize the grassor. When fats are well disposed of, the heart has the right fuel to work properly.
