It is still not entirely clear then (given the conflicting opinions on the matter) if it really is a drink that offers more advantages than disadvantages. Now new research puts itself on the side of coffee demonstrating its ability to protect the heart.

Now a new research puts itself on the side of coffee demonstrating its ability to protect the heart.



    A Brazilian study, conducted at the University of Sao Paulo's School of Public Health and published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, argues that coffee offers an important advantage: beyond its tonic capacity towards the mind, it would be able to avoid obstruction of the arteries thus decreasing the risk of heart attack.

    To arrive at this result, the research team sampled 4400 São Paulo citizens (aged between 35 and 74). Of all the participants, their habits related to daily coffee consumption were analyzed and then compared the data with measurements relating to the amount of calcium present in the coronary arteries.

    It was thus seen that the protective dose of coffee against the coronary arteries is 3 cups per day (it was Java coffee, a particularly robust blend). However, the authors point out that the health of the arteries improved following the intake of the right amount of coffee in people who had never smoked.

    The same experts now want to understand whether increasing the dose of coffee could be advantageous (it would therefore reach 4/5 cups) or if, as other studies show, this would not lead to health improvements. Interest will also shift to other types of foods or beverages, such as tea or dark chocolate, which still contain caffeine.

    In fact, this substance would have a protective role against the arteries and consequently the heart even if, as the authors of the research underline, coffee is "a complex mixture of minerals and different components", it could therefore be this mix that is beneficial to health.

    This is not actually the first research that associates moderate coffee consumption with benefits for the arteries. A few years ago the study of the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in Seoul showed a correlation between drinking coffee and a lower incidence of atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries.



    Also 3 cups of coffee would also be able, according to another study, to protect against senile dementia.

    It therefore seems that coffee, consumed without exaggerating, has more advantages than disadvantages. To say so also the EFSA which, however, does not recommend exceeding 4 cups a day, especially during pregnancy.
