Studies are continuing to try to counteract the presence of cancer cells, at the base of tumors. With particular reference to breast cancer, experts belonging to the National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad, in India, have experimented with the use of the extract from the leaves of a plant of local origin, called Murraya koenigii, in order to verify its action against cancer cells.

The Murraya koenigii plant has leaves that are used in the Indian culinary tradition to flavor dishes. It, in English, is called also as Curry Tree, expression derived from an imitation of the name attributed to the plant in India: “kadipatta”, pronounced as “curry-pratta”.

Please note: therefore: speaking of Curry Tree leaf extract we are not referring to the spice blend of Indian origin commonly called curry, now well known also in the West and usually composed of a set of powdered ingredients for the seasoning, among which you can find cumin, coriander, ginger, cloves, chilli and turmeric.

The study in question led the experts of the Indian institute to publish a scientific article which bears the title of "Murraya koenigii leaf extract inhibits proteasome activity and induces cell death in breast cancer cells" and which was recently published in the pages of the magazine “BMC Complementary & Alternative Medicine”.

Regarding the study in question, the experts took into account the activity of the multi-protein complex called proteasoma 26S in the mechanisms of breast cancer formation and the fact that polyphenols can reveal themselves able to inhibit this process, causing the death of cancer cells.

The researchers tested the effects of Curry Tree extract (Murraya koenigii) on breast cancer-related cancer cells and verified how it could reduce the activity of the 26S proteasome, limiting the growth of the tumor mass and favoring the death of cancer cells (apoptosis). The same effects were found with regard to cancer cells present in the lungs. The effect of the extract used it does not compromise healthy cells. Starting from it, the researchers hypothesize to be able to obtain a useful adjuvant in therapies aimed at fighting cancer.
