La diet mediterranean and in particular the consumption of oil extra virgin byolive they protect you from breast cancer. A new one confirms the beneficial effects of our diet study coordinated by the Spanish University of Navarra and the CIBERobn Biomedical Research Center.

The research, published in the journal Jama Internal Medicine, offers the first measurable results in a sample of nearly 4.300 women. Based on the new findings, the Mediterranean diet would reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by two-thirds. This was demonstrated by a large clinical study with an average follow-up of 4,8 years on a sample of 4.282 women.

Participants from Spain were divided into three: groups who followed as many types of diet: the classic Mediterranean rich in extra virgin olive oil, the same diet supplemented by walnuts and a low-fat diet for the control group.

In the first two cases the results confirm one lower incidence of the disease equal to one third of that obtained by the control group. Extra virgin olive oil had therefore contributed to reduce the risk of getting sick by 68% compared to the control group.

Of the total sample, only 35 cases had the disease, with a rate of 1,1 among those who followed the Mediterranean diet rich in extra virgin olive oil, 1,8 in the group of the Mediterranean diet with walnuts, and 2,9 for the control group.

According to the authors of the study, the secret would therefore be in the oil since the control group also followed a healthy diet:

"This suggests that the results could have been even more significant if they had been compared with a dietary pattern followed in Western non-Mediterranean countries," according to Dr. Martinez-Gonzalez.

However, further studies with larger samples will be needed to further confirm these results.
