Bad smell in the armpits? The cause would be linked to some genes that are part of the bacterial flora of the skin in this area of the body. This was revealed by a study on the human axillary microbiome.

The experts ofNew York University they identified both the bacteria that cause bad odor and the genes that trigger the molecular mechanism that produces it. The presentation of the study took place in Birmingham during the last conference of the Society of General Microbiology.

Lead authors of the research include Daniel Bawdon and Gavin Thomas. The bacteria responsible for the bad smell in the armpits are Staphylococcus epidermidis and other bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus. Researchers have identified the genes that lead these bacteria to produce the substances that generate bad odors. The phenomenon concerns the digestion of sweat by the bacteria themselves.

I genes have been identified. localized by researchers are present in the bacteria themselves. The research was born to develop new deodorants that could be able to hinder the action of these genes in the prevention of formation of bad odor due to underarm sweat. During the study, the researchers added odorless molecules to the bacteria, isolated between the buds found in the armpits, and studied their action on the active microbiome.

Scientists therefore intend to get to the origin of the problem and to find a solution to the bad smell starting from the action of the genes. In fact, in the opinion of the authors of the study, there is no point in eliminating all bacteria (like the question super resistant antibiotics and bacteria teaches us) but you should act in a more specific mood to obtain a more effective deodorant.

Doctor Dan Bawdon, a University of York expert who led the research, has explained: “This work has greatly advanced our understanding of the specific biochemical processes involved in the production of body odors. It was surprising to find that this particular path is ruled by only a small fraction of the many bacterial species residing in the axillary area. We have opened up the possibility of inhibiting the formation of bad odors by using compounds designed to target the specific proteins that control the release of foul-smelling substances. "

We will soon have the new generation deodorants? As the experts explained, further studies will still be necessary to understand the mechanisms that lead to the formation of bad odors and to understand the strategies to stem the phenomenon thanks to a new type of deodorant. In the meantime, let's not forget to experience the self-produced deodorant.
