The experts ofNew York University they identified both the bacteria that cause bad odor and the genes that trigger the molecular mechanism that produces it. The presentation of the study took place in Birmingham during the last conference of the Society of General Microbiology.
Lead authors of the research include Daniel Bawdon and Gavin Thomas. The bacteria responsible for the bad smell in the armpits are Staphylococcus epidermidis and other bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus. Researchers have identified the genes that lead these bacteria to produce the substances that generate bad odors. The phenomenon concerns the digestion of sweat by the bacteria themselves.

Doctor Dan Bawdon, a University of York expert who led the research, has explained: “This work has greatly advanced our understanding of the specific biochemical processes involved in the production of body odors. It was surprising to find that this particular path is ruled by only a small fraction of the many bacterial species residing in the axillary area. We have opened up the possibility of inhibiting the formation of bad odors by using compounds designed to target the specific proteins that control the release of foul-smelling substances. "
We will soon have the new generation deodorants? As the experts explained, further studies will still be necessary to understand the mechanisms that lead to the formation of bad odors and to understand the strategies to stem the phenomenon thanks to a new type of deodorant. In the meantime, let's not forget to experience the self-produced deodorant.
