AstraZeneca: EMA confirms safety of vaccine suspended as a precaution

The EMA ended its investigation without finding a causal link between the thrombosis cases and the use of AstraZeneca against the coronavirus.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

After he was suspended as a precaution and temporarily, the AstraZeneca anti-Covid vaccine it should be given again. The European Medicines Agency has in fact completed its investigation without finding a causal link between the cases of thrombosis in general and the use of AstraZeneca against the coronavirus.

The EMA, therefore, decides for a resumption of vaccinations. It is "an effective vaccine and right now the benefits of AstraZeneca's vaccine far outweigh its risks and its use should continue to save lives," as said - Emer Cooke, Executive Director of the European Agency for Health medicines.

The green light for the AstraZeneca vaccine arrives, therefore, by EMA, but there is a but. In fact, the EMA adds a new warning to the vaccine, in consideration of some aspects to be clarified on cases of cerebral thrombosis, on which, although rare, further investigations are required. The risks, however - they say - remain very remote compared to the complications that Covid-19 can entail in the most serious cases.

"A causal link with vaccination has not been proven, but it is possible and will require further analysis."

But how did this conclusion come about? Is there to rest assured? The Agency's experts examined 18 suspected cases of cerebral thrombosis from around 20 million vaccine administrations carried out so far in Europe. The analyzes took into account the methods, timing of administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the general health conditions of people who had then had circulatory problems. The controls did not reveal any anomalies and did not lead to finding greater risk factors in general on thrombosis.

A conclusion that the Agency reached by also verifying 7 cases of disseminated intravascular coagulation, a condition that leads to small clots forming in different areas of the body and blocking of small blood vessels. Analysis from which no causal link has emerged, but which must necessarily be followed by other checks. Both pathologies normally occur among the population, even in the absence of the vaccine, but the number (albeit very limited of cases) makes new analyzes necessary.
