Arsenic flavored organic foods in the USA. Blame the rice syrup

The organic brown rice syrup used to sweeten most of the organic products on the US market, replacing the glucose-fructose syrup, would contain traces of arsenic higher than what is commonly found in similar products. Could excessive consumption of some organic foods therefore be hazardous to the health of consumers?

Lo organic brown rice syrup used to sweeten most of the organic products on the US market, replacing the glucose-fructose syrup, would contain traces of arsenic higher than what is commonly found in similar products. Could excessive consumption of some organic foods therefore be hazardous to the health of consumers?

Doubts about the safety of some products sweetened with rice syrup currently on sale in the American market have arisen as a result of extensive research carried out by a group of experts from the NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences). The researchers' conclusions were presented in a study published in the pages of the scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

The experts started by taking the rice as a possible source of arsenic, the presence of which was later found in some products which, although not consisting of rice as the main ingredient, contain some derivatives, including the aforementioned syrup, so far the main culprit in relation to the presence of arsenic.

The presence of quantity of one worrying concentration of arsenic it has been found in products where rice syrup was present as a sweetener. Among the foods most at risk, some products specifically designed forchildhood, including a particular drink. High concentrations of arsenic have also been found in cereals, energy bars and other similar products used by athletes to improve their sports performance.

The analyzes were carried out both on products purchased via the Web and on products commonly found in stores and led to the detection of traces of arsenic often significantly higher in products containing organic brown rice syrup than those found in similar products sweetened with different ingredients. This immediately aroused the concerns of the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), which was able to find as in one drink specially formulated for children - it would be an "organic milk" - there was a concentration of arsenic six times higher than the permitted limit for the presence of this contaminant in drinking water, so that it is safe.

The scholars concluded that, given the current absence, in the United States, of specific regulations regarding the arsenic content in foods, measures should be taken as soon as possible by the competent bodies, as the use of products considered at risk indaily food it could lead to the introduction into the body of quantities of arsenic that could prove to be badly tolerated and dangerous.

E in our country? In recent weeks, the news of the condemnation suffered by the Ministries of the Environment and Health, which will have to compensate hundreds of citizens injured by a faulty service, which provided for the supply of public water that has been polluted by the presence of the same. arsenic and other contaminants in concentrations considered dangerous for our health.
