Why you should stop skipping breakfast right away and have a late dinner

Why you should stop skipping breakfast right away and have a late dinner

We often fall prey to bad habits that can negatively affect our health. These include skipping breakfast and late dining.

Often taken by haste and chaotic days we become prey to bad habits which, however, can have a very negative impact on our health. Among these the skip breakfast and have a late dinner.

Most of the time we focus on the quality of the food we eat, which is undoubtedly important, but we also forget that we should have 3 meals a day and two snacks on a regular basis. Especially for the health of our heart, we should never skip breakfast or eat dinner just before going to sleep (in the two hours before sleep).

To say it is a research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology which has shown how these bad habits, especially in people already at risk as they have previously suffered a heart attack, seriously jeopardize health.

The results, obtained by the research team of São Paolo State University who monitored a sample of 113 patients hospitalized for STEMI (acute myocardial infarction) with an average age of 60, show that people who do not eat breakfast and eat late have a risk to die from a second heart attack from 2 to 5 times greater than those who do not have these bad eating habits.

It is an interesting study mainly because it is the first time that the impact of eating habits has been evaluated in people with acute coronary syndrome. And think that in the research sample there were really many skipping breakfast and having a late dinner, 58% in the first case, 51% in the second and as many as 41% of the sample had both bad habits.

Among other things, previous studies had noted that often the habit of skipping breakfast and eating late at night also brings with it other irregularities such as smoking and doing little physical activity.

As Marcos Minicucci lead author of the research stated:

“Our study shows that these two poor eating habits are independently correlated with poor outcomes after a heart attack; however, those who add more bad habits can make things even worse. People who work late are at particular risk of eating late at night and not being hungry in the morning. We also believe that the inflammatory response, oxidative stress and endothelial function can all be involved in the association between incorrect eating habits and cardiovascular outcomes "

Researchers remind us of important and useful things even for those who do not suffer from heart disease:

    • Wait at least two hours after dinner before going to sleep
    • Always have a good breakfast that includes carbohydrates and proteins. The first meal of the day should provide between 15 and 35% of your total daily calorie intake.
