Uterine cancer: it would also be a question of being overweight! The risk doubles if you exceed this BMI

Recent research has identified a strong connection between obesity and the risk of developing uterine cancer. The data revealed an 88% risk in overweight women.

According to research, excess weight can nearly double a woman's risk of developing uterine cancer.

Scientists and doctors have long known who to be in overweight or obese increases the risk of developing the disease.

Now researchers at the University of Bristol have been able to shed further light on the link and the magnitude of the increased risk.

Specifically, they found that for every five units higher than their BMI, a woman's risk of endometrial cancer increases by 88%.

Dr Julie Sharp said:

Studies like this reinforce the fact that being overweight or obese is the second leading cause of cancer. These findings will play a pivotal role in discovering how to prevent and treat cancer in the future. More research is needed to investigate exactly what treatments and drugs could be used to manage cancer risk among people struggling with obesity. We already know that being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing 13 different types of cancer. To reduce the risk, therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy weight by following a balanced diet and staying active.

A systematic review

The study looked at the endometrial cancer, the most common type of cancer that affects the lining of the womb, the endometrium.

Genetic samples from 120.000 women in the UK, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Sweden and the US were examined. About 13.000 of them had uterine cancer.

The researchers looked at markers of 14 traits that may link obesity and this type of disease. They found two hormones, insulin fasting e testosterone, which increased the risk of cancer.

Finding the connection between obesity, hormones and disease, experts hope that in the future the drugs can be used to reduce or increase the level of specific hormones in people at higher risk.
