According to the legislation relating to the production of Parmigiano Reggiano PDO, dairy cows coming from other supply chains can be introduced into the protected circuit of Parmigiano Reggiano PDO as long as their milk is used only 4 months after their arrival in the new company. This is important to ensure that you have time to adapt the nutrition of the new garments to the rules of the DOP certification.
This procedure was not respected and therefore the carabinieri of the agri-food protection department (RAC) of Parma, in collaboration with the inspectors of the Dop certification body, seized the hard cheeses produced illegally with non-compliant milk. .
It is a total of 76 quintals of Parmigiano Reggiano which had the distinctive signs of the PDO designation on the side surface and for which 100 kg of non-compliant milk were used. The total value of the seizure is 69 thousand euros.
In addition to this, administrative offenses for a total of 4 thousand euros were charged to the two producing companies in the provinces of Parma and Reggio Emilia that had produced the cheese in a manner that did not comply with the Regulations.
For consumer protection and for the sake of transparency, we would have liked to have also published the names of the companies and products involved, including information on the distribution of these products for sale.
