New research has identified new genes that may one day help predict the onset of menopause

A woman already has many eggs when she is in her mother's womb, we are talking about six to seven million eggs. Already after birth, the number drops to about two million, and by puberty they reach 2-400.000 eggs.

Each month he loses hundreds more, until he does stops producing hormones and the number of her eggs is substantially zeroed; and here begins the menopause. The average age is 51, but it can happen much sooner or later.

A systematic review

Scientists in the UK have conducted a new one study to get more knowledge on the reproductive aging process. For this research they analyzed 200.000 women, and found 290 genetic variants linked to the time of menopause; Two key genes were found, Chek1 and Chek2, and it was noted that those who had more Chek1 had a much longer reproductive duration.

In addition, the study looked at women who naturally lack the active Chek2 gene, who on average experienced a delay in the menopause period of about 3,5 years.

This research could help improve infertility therapies; Doctors already use hormone tests to get fertility answers, but a future genetic test to find these newly identified genes could objectively let younger women know if they are at high risk of early menopause.
