There are mushrooms e mushrooms. But this time we will not talk about the seasonal ones with which soups and fettuccine are cooked. According to an American study, the famous magic mushrooms (drugs known as magic mushrooms not banned, for example, in Holland) have extraordinary properties, capable of changing - in a radical and lasting way - the personality of those who hire them.
To make known this disturbing reality is a research of the John Hopkins University, directed by Dr. Roland Griffiths and published in the "Journal of Phychopharmacology", where experts found that taking even small doses of the magic mushrooms can give immediate effects, such as the sudden change of personality, but also deeply unwanted, such as anxieties and fears.
The scientists' goal was verify the effects on humans of hallucinogenic mushrooms, and in particular to measure the consequences given by the psilocybin, the main ingredient and possible applications as anti therapies trough or particular mental disorders.
The investigation (for which a permit was requested and issued, given the illegality of the mushrooms) began with the selection of 51 volunteers, of different ages, who participated in 5 different times (sessions) in which they took these particular drugs.
In each session - lasting about 8 hours each - the volunteers - once ingested the drug - lay down on a sofa with their eyes covered by a mask and with headphones playing music: a solution designed to isolate the participants and analyze the effects.
After more than a year, the majority of the sample analyzed (6 out of 10) had undergone personality changes, showing themselves more open and outgoing.
Temporary or permanent effect?
“It is probable - commented Roland Griffiths - that these are permanent modifications, since we have found them even after more than a year from the experiment”.
Furthermore, in some cases there have been states of anxiety and fear, a fact not to be overlooked in cases where these mushrooms are used for medical and curative purposes.
Data in hand then, the doctors who advise the use of hallucinogens in the therapeutic sector enjoy today a greater awareness and have an extra tool for help fight the addiction of smoking o decrease depression related to serious illnesses, but everything must always take place under the strict control of experts.
And not mushrooms, but doctors!
