Wonderful news arrives from Mantua: a pregnant woman suffering from coronavirus is healed thanks to the hyperimmune plasma treatment. An extraordinary result that is the first in the world: in fact, there is no news at the moment of other pregnant women positive to Covid-19 and healed with this technique.

Her name is Pamela Vincenzi and the 28-year-old pregnant woman who recovered from the coronavirus thanks to plasma therapy, used atCarlo Poma hospital in Mantua to combat covid-19.

La plasma therapy consists in treating the sick with an infusion of blood containing hyperimmune plasma, donated by people who have already recovered from the coronavirus and on which, through appropriate analyzes, the presence of active antibodies against the new virus has been assessed.The use of this technique in the treatment of Covid-19 is very promising and, on this occasion, it has been shown to be effective even on pregnant women.

Pamela had arrived at the hospital on April 9 and her condition, the next day, had become so serious that it was necessary to transfer her to the Pneumology department. Hence the need to intervene promptly to avoid damage to the mother and the child she carries in her womb.

Plasma therapy was used on her to which, at the Mantua hospital, 4 other patients are also currently subjected while 5 Covid-19 patients are treated with the same technique at San Matteo Polyclinic in Pavia. A protocol has been signed between the two hospitals which up to now has provided for the infusion of hyperimmune plasma on 24 patients, for a total of 50 infused bags of the blood component.

Two pockets of hyperimmune plasma were enough for Pamela to get well again. As enthusiastically commented by Giuseppe De Donno, director of the Pneumology department of the Mantua hospital:

“After the plasma therapy, the improvement was decisive. The two swabs we made are negative ".

As told by Gianpaolo Grisolia, head of the Activity of Prenatal Pathology and Pregnancy, to protect the fetus we avoided resorting to assisted ventilation and:

“The advantage of a rapid recovery allows not to keep the child in a hostile environment, with poor oxygenation. From an ultrasound point of view, everything is fine. The fetus is in the 24th week "

Yesterday Pamela returned home with her husband and was able to hug her first daughter who is 2 years old.

The girl who will soon be born will be called Beatrice Vittoria, a way to celebrate and always remember his first success, obtained when he was still in his stomach.
