Coronavirus-positive leukemic child: treated with plasma, it even surpasses bone marrow transplantation. It is safe!

The 6-year-old boy, suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, had undergone treatment with plasma obtained from a subject recovered from the viral infection

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

She is only 6 years old and she has already seen many, too many, but she made it. The baby, suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, had tested positive for the coronavirus. So he was subjected to treatment with plasma obtained from a subject cured of viral infection and subsequently to a bone marrow transplant at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome. But he did it and now he's fine.

A long history of suffering that of the little one, who arrived from London with his family in October 2019 after a recurrence of the disease. It was immediately clear he needed a bone marrow transplant. Not having found a compatible donor, it was decided to proceed with the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells as a parent.

Unfortunately, however, in March 2020, in the heart of the pandemic, during the preparatory exams that the child's parents also undergo to determine which of the two would be the bone marrow donor, it turns out that the whole family is positive for coronavirus: dad and son they are asymptomatic, while the mother has mild symptoms.

It was necessary to wait for them to heal and prove negative to proceed with the removal of the cells and then the transplant, given that the little one had the immune defenses already compromised by leukemia.

A help from the plasma

To give the child more "weapons" to eliminate viruses and to reduce the risk of complications, the doctors of the Bambin jesù decide to resort to plasma obtained from a subject cured of viral infection, capable of circulating a charge of "strong" antibodies and further help the child.

The treatment is carried out on 9 May in the Covid Center in Palidoro. In the meantime, the father chosen as a bone marrow donor also tested negative for the swab and the go-ahead for the transplant, which was carried out on May 29, was given:

"The child is infused with stem cells from the father, specially manipulated to eliminate the alpha / beta + T lymphocytes, cells that are dangerous for the recipient's organism" reads the hospital's official statement.

Today the child is "in excellent general condition, has had no post-transplant complications, the father's cells are multiplying and is on the way to complete recovery", say the doctors.

Good recovery little one!
