Chemotherapy: the hair loss cap arrives

In the case of a tumor, a refrigerated cap can regenerate hair that has fallen out with chemotherapy

Tumors: chemotherapy is, unfortunately, synonymous with perdita di capelli. And if so much is done to revive the spirits of cancer patients, it is often only up to one's willpower to move forward. But, sometimes, some new technological solution, as a "simple" headset, could put a hand in it and assure those who have to undergo chemotherapy that at least their hair is not lost.

From the rationale that, in the case of chemotherapy, hair loss occurs due toatrophy of the root of the hair bulb targeted by the drug, it was born Paxman refrigerated cap, which in practice brings the temperature of the scalp to minus four degrees, producing a significant reduction in blood flow to the hair follicles and preserving them from destruction.

In short, a revolution on the head of a cancer patient. And a big relief. Hair loss, in fact, is by no means a negligible element for those suffering from cancer. "In a moment of general insecurity and fragility, linked to the difficult coexistence with an invasive disease - it is read on the site of the Modena Local Health Authority - the individual perceives every transformation, in this case the loss, albeit temporary, of hair as a trauma. Minimizing this particular discomfort therefore means improving the self-confidence of patients, and stimulating positive attitudes towards therapy “.

The refrigerated cap is a truly innovative tool tested on 88 women undergoing chemo (mainly due to breast cancer and for an average age of 53) atRamazzini Hospital in Carpi (Modena), the first center at national level for the number of patients recruited. The success rate fluctuates between 55 and 62%.

How it works - The Paxman system, designed in Great Britain, consists in the controlled cooling of the scalp with the use of a cap. The principle by which refrigeration reduces the effects of hair loss was known, but the problem was the maintenance of low temperatures, solved by this new type of device, which is able to treat 2 patients at a time, for a total of 4 per day, maintaining a fixed temperature of -4 ° C. In this way, hair loss due to the use of certain chemotherapy drugs is avoided in 50-70% of cases.

These days the cap is available to those who want to use it, as well as in Carpi, also in Avellino, thanks to the contribution of the Oncological Disease Association (Amo).
