According to a recent study, presented in Florida at the annual meeting of the Society of Gynecological Oncology, a patented extract of Basidiomycetes mushrooms would able to fight the Papilloma Virus (HPV), a major risk factor for cervical cancer.

The research was led by scientists from the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School led by Dr. Judith Smith. The team was able to intervene on cervical cancer cells using theAHCC that, alone without the use of other substances, led to the elimination of the HPV virus. As Dr. Smith herself explained: “AHCC is a common, well-tolerated dietary supplement that has been used for decades in Japan. The results of this study were very encouraging… (…) AHCC has the potential to treat HPV infection ”.

The supplement that the research wanted to test is based on mushrooms of the Basidiomycetes species and was used for treat cervical cancer cells incubated for 72 hours with sampling every 24 hours. The study was then also repeated on an animal model. What we have seen is that it took 90 days of AHCC administration to completely eliminate the virus. Furthermore, the control carried out the month following the suspension of treatment also confirmed the effective disappearance of the virus.

According to scientists the mushroom extract would act as an immunotherapy, or it would increase the function of the immune system against the disease. It is no coincidence that AHCC has been used in Japanese medicine for a long time to treat a variety of conditions (including cancer), above all for its antioxidant qualities and for its immunostimulating potential.
