It is no coincidence that it was nicknamed "the house of the Flintstones". Hidden in the mountains in the north of Portugal, near the municipality of Fafe and a large wind farm, the “House of Penedo”, inspired by the famous American cartoon, is a structure built between four giant stones, which were present on the site, and has a rather unusual and prehistoric look.
It was built in 1974 as “rural” holiday retreat for a local family, but in recent years it has attracted the attention of tourists and architecture enthusiasts, fascinated by its being perfectly integrated into the surrounding natural environment. Interest in the stone house has grown to such an extent that the current owner, Victor Rodrigues, he had to move elsewhere, to find some peace solace from curious visitors.
For safety reasons, who would have thought it, the property has bulletproof windows and a steel door. Due to the recent and growing interest in it and its remote and isolated location, Casa do Penedo has been the subject of numerous theft attempts and vandalism in recent years. Inside, however, the house is very welcoming, with stone furniture and stairs, railings and others wooden furnishings.
On the ground floor it is located a small hall, a sitting room and a kitchen, the sleeping area has been placed on the mezzanine. While the house may seem rustic, it is by no means lacking in amenities and comforts, which include a fireplace and a swimming pool carved out of one of the large rocks.
Because living in the manner of the Flintstones does not mean giving up on comforts!
