From yesterday 2 April the cannabis for therapeutic use it can also be used in the Czech Republic. The new law, passed last December, made it legal for the drug to be used against some serious diseases, including cancer, Parkinson's disease, AIDS and multiple sclerosis.
However, it will not be a question of a liberalization of marijuana, since its intake will be subject to medical prescription. It will be distributed in pharmacies but they will be able to sell it only after receiving the electronic prescription by the doctor.
A historic turning point, which confirms the positive effects of cannabis for some types of pathologies, despite the science is divided on this front. Then there is the problem for the Czech Republic of growing it in quantities that make marijuana available for medicinal use.
For this reason, at least for the first year, hemp will be imported from Holland and Israel. The National Institute of Drug Control will subsequently proceed to award the 5-year licenses for the cultivation cannabis shop from next year.
In the already liberal Czech Republic, where it is considered legal to own 15 grams of marijuana or grow up to 5 plants, this decision is significant. But despite the country's openness to cannabis, the percentage of Czech users fell from 20,3% in 2010 to 16,1% in 2011, according to the National Drug Monitor.
