Candida Auris, discovery and diffusion

The first time that Candida Auris is discovered is in the ear canal of a Japanese elderly person. The discovery took place precisely in Tokyo but the 70-year-old wasn't the only recorded case. The fungus over time it migrated until it reached the USA and the United Kingdom. Among the countries in which the fungus has been traced since 2009 we find Canada, Colombia, Germanai, India, Israel, Kenya, Kuwait, Norway, Pakistan, Spain, South Africa, South Korea and Venezuela.

È in London, the first case of infection in Europe occurs, where the presence of the fungus is found in at least 50 cases between April 2015 and July 2016. As for the deaths in recent months in the Use, where the first case was recorded in 2013, however, it is not possible to unequivocally link them to the presence of Candida Auris because the infected actually also had other pathologies. In the last year the number of cases of infection has grown exponentially in these areas.

Candida Auris, the fungus that spreads in hospitals and is resistant to drugs

The biggest problem for doctors is that this killer fungus resists treatment. Furthermore, it is difficult to identify it in tests because it tends to be confused with the common Candida. At the expense of it are weak subjects - the elderly and children in the first place - also because of the ease of dissemination, especially in environments such as hospitals, where the fungus was also found on instruments or furnishings, as well as on patients. Most at risk are people with low immune defenses or with conditions such as diabetes, women who have had premature babies, people on dialysis or who have recently undergone a transplant. But doctors reassure: most people don't have to worry and can enter the hospital without fear of contracting the infection.
