Many hair dyes and different chemicals with a smoothing effect contain substances that are carcinogenic and that interfere with the endocrine system and their use can increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

It is not the first time that researchers have investigated the carcinogenic potential of hair dyes and straightening products and today a new prospective court study has confirmed the association between hair products and breast cancer risk in women of different ethnicities. .

The research was conducted on data collected from over 45 thousand healthy women between the ages of 35 and 74 and involved in the "Sisters Study", a study carried out on the sisters of women with breast cancer.

Participants, enrolled between 2003 and 2009, answered questionnaires that included questions about the possible use of hair products in the twelve months prior to the start of the study.

The women were then monitored over time and almost 3000 became ill with breast cancer. Of these, 55% had used dyes, permanent or carried out smoothing chemical treatments for 5 or 8 weeks in the months preceding the onset of the disease.

The use of these products, especially if frequent, has resulted in greater risks for black women than for white women. As for hair dyes, these can increase the chances of getting breast cancer by 45% in African American women and 7% in white women.

In women, both white and black, they used it instead chemical treatments to straighten the hair, the likelihood of developing breast cancer was 30% higher than in women who do not use these treatments

The study therefore concluded that the application of permanent dyes and straightening products may play a role in breast carcinogenesis.

On the other hand, no significant association emerged between the onset of breast cancer and the application of semi-permanent and temporary dyes.

It is therefore better to avoid resorting to chemical straightening treatments and, if we want to cover gray hair or change hair color, choose natural products or temporary dyes.
