A new French study warns of possible health risks related to bisphenol S and bisphenol F, two substitutes for the bisphenol A for the production of plastics. According to the French researchers, these two substances are of concern.

Recently France made known your own intention to eliminate bisphenol A from plastic and receiptsdespite the opposition of companies. Two years ago we had already talked to you of bisphenol S as a suspect substitute for bisphenol A. Perhaps the companies that have decided to replace bisphenol A with bisphenol S have not made a truly sensible choice from the point of view of health protection.

According to the French researchers, bisphenol F and bisphenol S they can impair the development of the testes in fetuses, as they pointed out in the scientific journal Fertility and Sterility. Laboratory tests have shown that these compounds are capable of reducing fetal testosterone production. The study in question bears the title of "A new chapter in the bisphenol A story: bisphenol S and bisphenol F are not safe alternatives to this compound".

"Any reduction in testosterone production, as caused by these types of bisphenol, will affect the normal development of the testes with possible consequences of infertility" - stressed René Habert of Paris Diderot University, co-author of the study.

Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a common component of plastic bottles and coatings of food cans. Studies have linked BPA to brain and nervous system problems, reproductive disorders and obesity. It could also put unborn babies at risk of developing breast cancer later in life. Europe already banned the production of bottle containing bisphenol A on its territory.

In some products bisphenol S and bisphenol F would have started to replace bisphenol A: "But while their chemical structure is very similar to that of bisphenol A, their potential harm to humans or animals has never been tested and these substances are not subject to regulation" - the French experts said.

Bisphenol S and bisphenol F would have undergone the same type of test that in 2012 revealed the correlation between bisphenol A and risk to male fertility. French research currently represents the first study which demonstrated a negative physiological effect of bisphenol S and F on humans. Replacing bisphenol A with bisphenol S or F would therefore not be safe. What alternatives will French companies choose to respond to the government's request to replace bisphenol A with substances that are safe for health?
