AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots: In rare cases, an immune reaction has led to antibodies which have caused a severe bleeding disorder and thus thrombosis. But public health experts have repeatedly argued that the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risks for most people. However, what to do if we suspect that we have unwanted symptoms?





If we got a vaccine Vaxzevria - formerly Covid-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca - (but this applies to any type of vaccine and drug) and we believe we are suffering from some first side effect, the first thing to do is to contact your doctor.

TheEma, the European Medicines Agency, which in a note makes it known that the PRAC, the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee, noted that "blood clots have occurred in the veins of the brain (cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, CVST ) and abdomen (thrombosis of the splanchnic vein) and arteries, along with low platelet levels and sometimes bleeding ”.

And need:

"People who have received the vaccine should seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptoms of a combination of blood clots and low platelets."

In addition, as the EMA points out, health professionals should also tell those who receive the vaccine to consult a doctor in case of symptoms of blood clots as:

  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain
  • swelling of the legs
  • persistent abdominal pain
  • neurological symptoms such as severe and persistent headache and blurred vision

But specifically, what are the signs of thrombosis to watch out for?

Attention to the formation of bruises, except where the injection was given, small red spots on the skin or copious bleeding.

These are the signs to watch out for as a precautionary measure:



  • signs of bleeding of the skin or mucous membranes
  • bruises
  • small red spots on the skin
  • bleeding that does not stop normally.

Additionally, there may be other different symptoms of blood clots (depending on the location of the blood clot in the body). These could be:

  • bad headache
  • severe stomach pain
  • a leg that becomes cold
  • sudden and unexpected pain in parts of the body
  • breathing difficulties
  • paralysis of one side of the body

Other possible side effects of Vaxzevria

  • feeling faint or lightheaded
  • changes in heartbeat
  • shortness of breath
  • wheezing
  • swelling of the lips, face or throat
  • hives or rash
  • nausea or vomiting
  • stomach ache
