Just eating 150 grams of blueberries a day to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 15%. The merit would be of their blue color, given by anthocyanins, a type of phytochemical with valuable antioxidant properties that has a fundamental role in the control of the metabolic syndrome.

This is supported by a study by the University of East Anglia, in collaboration with colleagues from Harvard, which analyzed the ability of blueberries to have a positive effect precisely on the metabolic syndrome, that condition that affects a third of westernized adults and includes at least three of the following risk factors: hypertension, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, low levels of "good cholesterol" and high levels of triglycerides.

Well, according to scholars, blueberries and other berries should be included in diets to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease especially among the risk groups. Therefore, not only excellent for regulating pressure in menopause, against infections, to overcome traumatic experiences and as natural anti-hypertensive, blueberries they also save our hearts.

    A systematic review

The team analyzed for 6 months the effects of introducing a small amount of blueberries into the daily diet of 138 overweight and obese people, aged 50 to 75, with metabolic syndrome. They then asked them to eat either 150 grams or 75 grams of freeze-dried blueberries each day, while a third group was given a placebo dose of just artificial colors and flavors.

According to the data collected, eat 150 grams of blueberries per day reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 12-15%. Benefits that were not found with regard to the 75 gram dose and the placebo.

“We found that eating a cup of blueberries a day resulted in sustained improvements in vascular function and arterial stiffness, also playing an important role in reducing cardiovascular risk by between 12 and 15 percent,” the researchers explain.

A finding that, all in all, is reflected in previous studies that have indicated that people who eat blueberries regularly have a reduced risk of developing conditions that include type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This could be because blueberries are rich in natural compounds called anthocyanins, which are the flavonoids responsible for the red and blue color of the fruits.
