Swine fever: chaos in Sardinia. The blockade of ports is threatened

The EU wants to block exports of pork from Sardinia, but Coldiretti and Sardinian shepherds threaten a block on imports

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

The theme Sardegna for the blocking of the export of pork and derivatives from Sardinia, which came from Brussels due to swine fever. The story is rather complex. For some time the Sardinian shepherds complained of the risk of two outbreaks of Brucellosis in goat farms located in the Municipality of Orosei and in the Municipality of Uras. Laboratory investigations revealed that the infected goats came from Spain.

Already then, last October, i Sardinian Shepherds they feared what would happen: “We denounce the strong concern of our sheep-goat sector but also pigs regarding the introduction of live animals in Sardinia. We have certain news that on Minister Fazio's table there is already a Ministerial Ordinance to ban the export of pork from Sardinia, which until now was possible for companies accredited for African Swine Fever, Classical Swine Fever and Vesicular Disease. Swine, thanks to a decision of the European Community 2005/363 / EC. If Fazio signs the Ordinance it will be the sure death of the Sardinian pig sector which is made up of 15.000 companies with about 180.000 pigs ”.

Hard times are expected for Sardinian shepherds, given that the EU has provided for the blocking of exports of all types of meat, including healthy ones. For this reason, Coldiretti Sardegna has announced the blocking of imports of animals from abroad.

Threaten i Sardinian Shepherds: "If the authorities in charge do not intervene to protect Sardinian animal husbandry, the Sardinian Shepherds Movement will again preside over the ports of Sardinia as we did in 2010, and once and for all we would question the exchange of goods between EC member countries ".

What farmers are asking is not to punish healthy meats. But how high is the risk of contagion? We know that such situations are in any case at risk for the entire sector. And once a disease has spread, is it difficult to trace its exact origin? Remember the intricate story ofE coli? And all that emerged about the intensive breeding? Not to mention the pandemics that haunt us every year at this time of year, fromavian to the swine.

But the Sardinians defend themselves: "Our farms are controlled ad nauseam while the animals that enter Sardinia have no controls or rather the controls are carried out in the carlona style, as we have seen for the Brucellosis-infected goats from Spain who traveled with regular Certificates of Officially Brucellosis Free Farms ".

E Coldiretti threatens: "We will eat only Sardinian meat".
