We speak, in fact, of the lavender harvest which here usually occurs after the first half of July amidst the buzz of bees. TO Valensole, an ancient village perched between Plateau de Valensole and the valley of Notre Dame, there is the annual Lavender Festival, in which the whole country is transformed.
Women dress in traditional clothes, the streets are adorned with stalls with local products such as lavender essential oil.
It all takes place in a single day with free visits to the fields, demonstrations of harvesting methods, but also distillation of flowers and exhibits on the tools used for the processing of lavender.
The legend of lavender
In Provence, the legends related to lavender are numerous. In Valensole, in particular, that of Lavandula, a fair-haired, blue-eyed fairy born in the mountain of Lure. It is said that the fairy, she took a landscape book to choose the place to live. In front of the page that showed the valleys of Provence all arid and without nature, she began to cry. Lavandula's tears falling on the book, stained it with blue tones, to cover the damage she had done, the fairy took a piece of sky and spread it over Provence.
Since then, according to legend, Provence has been covered in lavender and all the girls have blue eyes like Lavandula's.
