Ikea, a famous Swedish giant specializing in low-cost furniture, will have to pay a compensation of $ 46 million to the family of Josef Durek, the Californian child killed under the weight of a chest of drawers.
The cabinet, a Malm model chest of drawers, is sold by Ikea under the recommendation to fix it to the wall, just to prevent it from tipping over when the drawers are opened.
Little Josef's family, however, ignored this important instruction and the child got stuck under the weight of the chest of drawers following overturning.
Joseph he was only two years old at the time of the accident, which occurred in May 2017, and he died of suffocation, due to the pressure of the furniture on his small body.
Already in 2016, again in America, there were several victims among children, killed by the overturning of Malm dressers not fixed to the wall.
Josef was in fact the eighth child killed and, following the numerous cases, Ikea had withdrawn the product from the stores and had granted a compensation of 50 million dollars to the families of three children killed by the Malm dresser.
However, Josef's family has not received any news of the recall of the drawers and the risk of overturning and has not taken any measures.
Now the child's parents will receive compensation, but unfortunately nothing will bring little Josef back to life.
Many Ikea furniture have to be fixed to the walls as due to the weight they could tip over when opening doors or drawers. If for an adult, the overturning of a piece of furniture may have few consequences, for a child the accident can be lethale.
And so very important to follow the recommendations manufacturer's and do not ignore the instructions that come with the furniture.
