In New York, the park with the greenest public toilets in the world

A redevelopment project of one of the areas of the Riverside Park in Manhattan, long abandoned, but recently rediscovered especially by cyclists, involves the construction of a relaxation point complete with toilets, pergolas and places to stop for a break or to admire the vegetation present along the Hudson River. The most surprising is the project aimed at creating toilets according to sustainability criteria, which could include a special composting process of the organic material.

A redevelopment project for one of the Riverside Park areas in Manhattan, long abandoned, but recently rediscovered especially by the cyclists, provides for the construction of a relaxation point complete with toilet, pergolas and places to stop for a break or to admire the vegetation present along the course of the Hudson River. The most surprising is the project aimed at creating toilet according to criteria sustainability, which could include a specific composting process of organic material.

Le innovative toilet would find an underground location, so as not to damage the visual impact of the magnificent panorama of the park and, for their functioning they could exploit thesolar power through special panels. The project also provides for a collection system for gray waters, with particular attention to rainwater, so that it can be reused for i public toilet drainage systems. The special toilets were designed by the Clivus Multrum company, which has been operating in the sector for years.

The abandoned car park currently present in the area will be replaced by a green flowery lawn, which can be fertilized using the special fertilizer obtained from the special composting system. The construction of a small refreshment point is also planned, the appearance of which will be studied in harmony with the landscape, and for which a green roof and panels will be built for the use of solar energy. It can be particularly exploited by cyclists who will walk the paths of the park and by tennis players who will gather in the already dedicated structures.

For the construction of the entire complex, attention to the environment will be maintained as high as possible. They will be employed recycled materials and methods will be studied to minimize any waste and so that waste can be intelligently differentiated by those who will go to the park for the traditional pic-nic domenicale. The care of flower beds and gardens will be amplified, so that they can brighten the atmosphere with their flowers at any time of the year.

The toilets and the annexed relaxation points will be designed to be completely carbon neutral. This means that efforts will be made to eliminate or completely compensate for any co2 emissions. We recall that the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, deriving from most of the activities carried out by man, is considered one of the most important factors responsible for global warming.

Composting systems for unloading and waste collection will be planned in such a way as to avoid the pollution of the waters of the river that flows near one of the most traveled paths in the park. The renovation of the park is expected to be completed by the end of 2012, mainly thanks to the economic contribution from environmental associations and the help provided by numerous volunteers.
