Ikea will sell spare parts for its products online. A strategy based on sustainability and reuse

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Fix instead of throw. Ikea aim for reuse and go back to the good old habit of our parents and grandparents: fixing. He has in fact announced that he will start selling spare parts in his stores. This will make it possible to repair the furniture instead of throwing it away to buy new ones.

It seems like a detail but it is not. In the disposable era, Ikea is aiming for reuse. Last year she opened her first second hand furniture shop in Eskilstuna, Sweden but is now ready to do more. To extend the life of its products, it will start selling spare parts to customers around the world. In fact, it already made some spare parts available last year but has now decided to do so extensively and has developed an online ordering system that will be launched worldwide on its website by 2021.

This was announced by Lena Pripp-Kovac, head of sustainability at Ikea who told the Financial Times:

"To extend the life of the products, a fundamental aspect is to have spare parts".

The timing of the sale of Ikea spare parts is not yet known. Of course, the Swedish giant is trying to be more sustainable. Just yesterday it announced that it had reached its 2020 target by obtaining all the wood from certified or recycled sources, i.e. 98%.

“At IKEA, we want to make responsible forest management the norm, stop deforestation, improve biodiversity and support the people who depend on forests for their livelihoods. Responsibly managed forests also play a vital role in mitigating climate change. By applying stringent requirements and collaborating with various organizations around the world, we have helped advance the forestry sector. Yet the pressure on the world's forests and surrounding ecosystems is increasing. Now is the time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important assets for generations to come, ”said Jon Abrahamsson Ring, CEO of Inter IKEA Group.
