    Vitamin D deficiency can act subtly on our body and progressively weaken it. This is why it is essential to recognize the signals of suffering that our body sends us

    La vitamin D it is an essential element for our health: it promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine and at the same time inhibits the release of parathyroid hormones, responsible for the weakening of the bones and possible fractures; it also improves the function of the immune system, increases muscle strength and also has beneficial effects on the health of our heart. Unfortunately, however, since there are few foods that contain it, there is often a shortage. Symptoms of vitamin D levels in the blood are often vague and general, and the problem can easily pass into a moment of temporary fatigue.

    For example, tiredness or heaviness in the limbs, difficulty walking or climbing stairs can be a warning sign of a vitamin D deficiency., according to this study; Bone pain from moderate pressure (especially in the ribs or shins) may also indicate a deficiency. This is because low levels of vitamin D cause a noticeable weakening of the bones and muscles, making even the simplest activities - such as walking - tiring. Unfortunately, however, these are symptoms that can be confused with those of a trivial flu as well as another long series of health problems.

    But how to understand that you suffer from a vitamin D deficiency? A simple blood test is enough to check if the levels of this element in our body are correct:

    • a normal level of vitamin D has a concentration of ≥20 ng / mL;
    • we speak of deficiency if the vitamin level is between 12 and 20 ng / mL;
    • severe insufficiency is defined as a vitamin D concentration below 12 ng / mL.

    It is an examination that we should all do from time to time, but which is particularly recommended for those suffering from osteoporosis, those who have suffered a bone fracture in the recent past or those who recognize themselves in the symptoms set out above.

    Those who find a deficiency or insufficiency of vitamin D would do well to consult their GP and possibly choose to take food supplements; even the inclusion of foods with added vitamin D can be a way to make up for the lack. The two most common forms of supplements of this vitamin are ergocalciphenol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciphenol (D3): the second is the preferred form, because it is able to increase the levels of vitamin D in the blood more effectively.
