We talk more and more often about the use of Marijuana for therapeutic purposes and countries in the world are growing and are beginning to legislate in such a way as to be able to use this substance to treat or alleviate the ailments caused by various pathologies. Now new research appears to have shown that Marijuana is capable of fight the virus that causes AIDS.

This is a study, conducted by a group of researchers from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and published in AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses, which noted as one of the most important and well-known active ingredients in cannabis, THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), be able to protect cells from the damage caused by the HIV virus.

More specifically, the research, conducted on an animal model, analyzed the effects of THC on the SIV virus (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus), or the animal equivalent of HIV. What the researchers observed was nothing short of surprising: continuously giving THC twice a day for 2 months to sick monkeys, damage to the immune tissue of the stomach and intestines decreased (particularly affected when the HIV virus is present in the body) and the number of healthy cells returned to being high.

It must be said that there is no evidence that this process occurs identically in humans as wellHowever, the researchers still wanted to highlight the importance of their research: “This study is important because it begins to explain how THC can influence disease progression in SIV-infected macaques. It also reveals a new way to slow the progression of the disease ”.

Scholars therefore believe that the positive results obtained with this research could lead to the creation of new Marijuana-based treatments useful for controlling the proliferation of the virus. However, a "small" problem to overcome is the fact that in the United States, as probably in many other countries in the world, it is not allowed to test the effects of Marijuana on human beings with AIDS.
