Not all evils come to harm: negative experiences can have really positive and unexpected implications on our life. Without clashes and difficulties we live in static and we are unable to evolve. Here then is that we should welcome difficulties as challenges for our inner growth.

After all, we must not forget that life is a struggle. A part of Eastern culture has always had these concepts in it and for some time also Western psychology is approaching a vision of life based on a broader perspective.

In fact, what at this moment appears to us as a completely negative situation in the future could change its meaning because it will have triggered a positive change and maybe an improvement in our life.

This is one of the topics at the center of the book "Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind", written by Psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman and by author Carolyn Gregoire.

The two authors deal with analyzing what happens to those who go through a truly traumatic moment in their life. What can be the changes that involve the mind in such cases?

Difficult situations stimulate the creative mind, push us to find solutions to the problems to be faced. Trauma and difficulties represent one struggle for survival and if we don't want to succumb we have to react, we have to be resilient people.

Difficult situations have a positive effect on the creative mind and the authors of “Wired to Create” refer to Frida Kahlo to explain the phenomenon. Her extraordinary works of art are the fruit of a life full of trauma, disease and complications. The artist's mind was strengthened and she was able to express the experiences lived through art.

The phenomenon is studied in psychology as "Post-traumatic growth". The term "post-traumatic growth" was coined in the XNUMXs by psychologists Richard Tedeschi and Laerence Calhoun to describe the situations of those individuals who have undergone a profound transformation after facing various traumas and life challenges.

For many people the traumatic experiences are synonymous with a profound improvement. According to the experts, the trauma is like an earthquake that shakes all our certainties. Those who live a traumatic experience perhaps up to that moment were not so happy with their life and manage to take this opportunity to transform it. Anger, sadness, anxiety and pain are the normal responses to a trauma, they allow first of all to process it. Then comes the time to react.

According to the authors of the new book, in conclusion, we should learn to consider the creativeness as a method to face difficulties and to make positive what at a given moment appears negative and stressful to us. In other cases, traumatic events can lead us to increase our creative expression through artistic activities: this is also an effective method for working through difficulties and grief.
