La Food and Drug Administration, a government agency that deals with food and drug safety in the United States, would be ready to kick off its marketing, after the positive opinion of last December. There would be no threat, the FDA reiterates, to the environment and health.
But the associations, three years after the announcement of the birth of the renamed salmon Frankenfish (pesce Frankenstein), I disagree at all. Friends of the Earth, then, appeals to major American retailers, asking to refuse to stock up on the new GMO super salmon. "The approval of GM salmon will set a precedent that could open doors for other GM animals, including cows, chickens and pigs, that could enter our food system," the association says.
Detractors argue that this fish may constitute a consumer cancer risk, due to the high concentration of growth hormone, and destroy other races. They also point out that polls suggest about 90 percent of Americans don't want to see GMO fish for sale. The producer, then, defends himself by insisting that it is only female and sterile fish, but activists recall how it is possible that these change sex, especially under stress.
Il risk of contamination for wild salmon, therefore, it is far from negligible. So far a dozen major retailers, including Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Target, they promised to boycott the animal raised by the Canadian AquaBounty. Also because the introduction of GMO salmon, environmentalists always say, could be avoided thanks to better management of conventional fish resources.
